Fahrenheit451 (8)

Entry of your choice

Would living in a utopian society be just perfect?

Utopia...a place with angels and laughter, honey falls, butterflies dancing, beautiful flowers swinging in the swirls...just like heaven!
Would it be that great?

I asked myself this question and it might be great at first but gradually it wouldn’t.
Everything would be boring since there aren’t any conflicts. Living with conflicts may seem painful but life is much more interesting and vivid with it.
Everything’s perfect so people won’t try to do thing and become lazy. People need to work and realize how proud they can be by the results. They won’t be able to find important meanings in life.
Even though our society has lots of defects, the most ideal society is our world!

Are there any settings in this novel which you have found to be beautiful? or disturbing? or memorable? Describe these settings and comment on why they were meaningful to you.

The first time where Clarisse and Montag meet at night made a beautiful setting inside my head. The descriptions of the setting were detailed and wonderful.
“The autumn leaves blew over the moonlit pavement in such a way…”
“They walked in the warm-cool blowing night on the silvered pavement and there was the faintest breath of fresh apricots and strawberries in the air.”

Montag’s house was a disturbing setting because it had the three walls (televisions) and there was a conversation held between Montag and Beatty. The three walls, which are the televisions, are Mildred’s favorites. However it was annoying Montag and even me. There was a conversation where Beatty tells Montag about books and censorships. I thought the conversation was thought-provoking and interesting.

Please choose one passage from the novel that is significant to you. Why is this passage meaningful? Please type it into one of your entries and comment on what you think about the passage.

“Do you know why books such as this are so important? Because they have quality. And what does the word quality mean? To me it means texture. This book has pores.”

It's the part where Faber tells Montag the importance of books. He is emphasizing the quality, which means the meaning that the book contains.
This significant passage was meaningful because it sort of represents the whole story and it’s telling the value of books. I liked it how he explained it in a metaphorical way. I thought this passage could influence people about the importance of books in an easier way.

Fahrenheit451 (5)

What is the mood of this novel? Do you find this novel saddens you in any way? Why?

The mood starts off with darkness but ends with hopes. Through out the story, there were books that have to be burnt and a war with jets and bombs that destroyed the city. However in the end, it showed that books are the solution to mankind’s survival. Also Montag and Granger set up a mirror factory for people to understand and see their self clearly; this takes part in of building a new society.
The novel saddened me because it made me thought of how people these days don’t read books that much. Furthermore some people hate reading and thinks it’s a waste of time. I believe that books are the bread of brain. It helps you expand your imagination and helps you go through experiences indirectly.

Fahrenheit451 (4)

What is the climax of this novel? What happens? How do the events of this novel make you feel?

The climax of this novel is when Montag murders Beatty. After Montag burns his house, he was under arrest by Beatty. Beatty keeps on rebuking Montag; Montag uses flamethrower to burn him and eventually turned him into ashes. When I pictured the moment Montag had put flamethrower on Beatty, I had thrills all over my body. I felt relieved when Montag killed him because he kept on afflicting Montag and there would be an opportunity to escape from this situation. Also the next part was exciting where Montag gets inject with anesthetic by mechanical hounds but still runs away with his numb leg.

Fahrenheit451 (3)

Who are the main characters in the novel? Do you like them? Why or why not? What is special about them? What do they reveal about the universal human experience?

Guy Montag – I like how he has a clear assertion. The special thing about him is that he doesn’t just adapt to the society but realizes the problem and tries to change it. I highly praise his bravery of trying to rebuild civilization. He reveals revolutionists in the history. He bears hardships and do what he thinks is right.

Mildred Montag – I didn’t like how she didn't understand and was not supportive to her husband. Since they are married couples, they are desperately needed for each other. I couldn’t believe when Mildred betrayed her husband by calling the fire station. However on the other hand, I felt kind of sorry for her when she suicides. This tells me that she is going through difficulties.

Captain Beatty – He is a strange character because he knows a lot about books but hate books. I wasn’t fond of him because his thoughts made me shudder, how he tries to do something with Guy Montag.

Fahrenheit451 (2)

Are there are any current situations in the world that relate to the novel? What are they, and how do they relate? Does the novel shed any light on how current situations could be resolved or "fixed"?

Communism of North Korea relates to this novel. We are not allowed to posses or read books in the novel; in North Korea people are not allowed to have religion, phase, and rights. They are educated to worship ‘Kim Jung Il’ as their father. They don’t know if the society phenomenon is right or wrong but just follow. It’s like people think naturally about burning books in the novel.
In the end Montag and his friends build up a new society and I thought this can shed light to North Korea. Unless a brave person comes out to raise a revolution, North Korea would be the same forever.

What is the major theme of this novel? Why is this theme important to a teenager living in 2007?

The major theme of this novel is the importance of reading books. These days, people don’t read books often because of so many reasons.
The influence of television made people away from books. People have time to watch television but don’t have the time to crack a book. You don’t get to think much since the television shows directly. However books make you think deeply. Helps you expand your imagination and makes you think critically. I think this is very important because today’s society wants creativity.
This theme is important to a teenager living in 2007 because this is the age of setting personalities and values. Books help you get indirect experiences and give you the time to think. Also twenty-first century wants creative person. Nothing is better than books that can help you think creatively.
